New Alberta Medical Association president says pot needs more research

The incoming president of the Alberta Medical Association says the medical community has its work cut out for it with the legalization of recreational pot around the corner.

Dr. Neil Cooper said there’s still not a lot known about marijuana.

“There’s like 220 different substances in marijuana and we understand about 40 of those. The studies showing us the effects of marijuana are few and far between and by legalizing medical marijuana in a sense, it took the market away for any company that might be interested in doing studies,” he said.

However, Dr. Cooper said the few completed studies show marijuana definitely has a negative impact on developing brains.

He supports the call to ban the substance to people under 21, and limit the strength of pot issued to people under 25.

Recreational pot use becomes legal across the country on Canada Day 2018.
