Conklin will see more affordable housing.

Wood Buffalo Housing and Development Corporation (WBHDC) and the Conklin Resource Development Advisory Committee (CRDAC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to improve affordable housing in the community.

President and CEO of WBHDC, Henry Hunter said that this collaboration has been an ongoing conversation with the CRDAC.

“Wood Buffalo Housing and the Conklin Resource Development Advisory Committee have the same vision. We want to see citizens in our community have an access to safe and affordable housing. So that is a common goal we are trying to address,” said Hunter.

The first stages of the agreement is to set up a working group to start identifying what the issues are, rank the issues in order of priority and develop a plan to address the issues.

Currently between the communities of Conklin and Janvier Wood Buffalo Housing has 21 units, with one vacancy in Janvier.

Hunter said there is no timeline for the project.

“The timeline is whatever it takes and whatever it needs to get done. The biggest problem is financing for that housing and where we are going to find the money to do it,” added Hunter.

Hunter said they are hoping to secure some funding from the federal government.
