Traffic Safety a concern in Fort McMurray

If Re-elected to council, Kieth McGrath will make traffic safety a top priority.

The government of Alberta will be hosting traffic safety days in schools across the province. Traffic safety day gives young students an opportunity to learn how important it is to practise safety in their daily lives.

Increased safety on residential streets across the community will be a priority for Keith McGrath if re-elected to Council for Ward 1 in this year’s municipal election.

“Safety for our residents has to be the top priority for any Council, and I think we need to be continually having a conversation about this issue,” said McGrath. “We also need to be doing more to ensure we have safe streets, sidewalks and neighbourhoods – during the last term I put forward some ideas about the steps we can take as a community, working in collaboration with our residents and our dedicated RCMP and Bylaw Services officers.

As former Chair of Council’s Land Planning and Transportation Committee, McGrath championed the recent on-street parking study conducted by the Municipality.

“If re-elected, this will be an important priority because public safety is paramount to building a healthy community. Some of our streets are not wide enough for parking on both sides, while I’m hearing from residents that drivers using excessive speed in some neighbourhoods remains an issue. I also believe all of our crosswalks should be uniform across the Municipality – familiarity makes it easier for everyone to make decisions that increase safety.”

Residents could learn more about keeping safe on roadways at traffic safety days. Experts will teach safety rules to elementary students and teachers through a variety of interactive events. In Fort McMurray the next traffic safety day will be on Friday, Sept. 29 at Father Beauregard School from 8:45 a.m. till 2:45 p.m.
