For the first time in 13 years the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo has a new leader.

Unofficial results determine that Don Scott earned the most votes with 8911.

Allan Grandison followed with 3160, Anthony Needham brought in 650 and Allan Vinni had 259.

“As the results were coming in, I was watching with some of my team and I was humbled and honoured,” said Scott. “What I really wanted was a mandate. I have been talking about a lot of issues going forward that I wanted to see address and I believe I have that mandate. I wanted a strong show of support for the things that I was talking about and I am very grateful for the residents who got out and voted and gave me that mandate.”

Scott said the first order of business is getting all the new elected councillors together.

“What I really want for this council to be is cohesive. I want us to be like a team going forward, a team with the aim of getting things done,” said Scott.

Scott added that what council does next has to reflect what voters told them in the election.

The mayor and councillors will be sworn in on Oct. 24.
