FireSmart project in Anzac will mitigate risk of wildfire

PHOTO. Supplied. FireSmart is a national program adopted in communities across Canada aimed at reducing the risk of wildfire in interface zones where the urban setting meets environments prone to wildfire.

Thinning and pruning of evergreen trees and clearing of dead trees in Anzac will start Oct. 23.

FireSmart has teamed up with Infinite Forestry Consulting Ltd. for its fuel reduction project.

Managing vegetation helps reduce the fuel for a future fire and slow its growth which makes it easier to fight and plan for emergencies.

You’re asked to avoid active work zones, be aware of signs and use caution on trails.

The majority of debris will be disposed of using supervised burns. Firewood and mulch will be made available where possible.

The municipality says that every effort will be made to minimize the smoke during the burning process and that signage will be posted near work areas to alert residents to the potential of smoke.

The fire and smoke from the burning may trigger unexpected emotional reactions. Leesa McLeod, People Services, Recovery Task Force says supports are available to residents experiencing stress.

“Disasters such as the wildfire can impact your emotional and physical health long after the event,”
