Krish Shah, a grade 9 student at École McTavish Junior High Public School has won the “Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers” from the Governor General’s Office.

The 14-year-old is the co-founder and spokesperson for Eco YOLO, the school’s environmental sustainability club.

Last year he helped rally over 200 students to replant trees in Saprae Creek following the wildfire.

Shah was presented the award by Craig Kielburger, the founder of ME to WE on October 31 at the WE Day an “Evening of Inspiration” event in Calgary, he said it was an experience he will never forget.

“This was exhilarating! That’s the only word I can use. Ms. Moody told me 10 minutes before I was called onstage. I was nervous, but it was great to get the medal from Craig Kielberger, my role model. He has a vision to make the world better, and so do I,” said Shah.

Robynn Moody, Eco YOLO advisor and Science teacher at École McTavish was delighted to see Shah honoured.

“He is truly an exemplary leader in our community. I made it my mission to ensure the story of Eco YOLO, and Krish’s leadership was recognized,” said Moody.

Shah and Moody received praise from Scott Barr, Principal, École McTavish along with Superintendent Doug Nicholls.
