More flights between Fort Chipewyan and Fort McMurray

There are now more travel options for those who have to commute between Fort Chipewyan and Fort McMurray.

The Athabasca Tribal Council (ATC) has worked with Northwestern Air Lease to create three flights per week, starting Nov. 8, 2017, to and from Fort Chipewyan and Fort McMurray

Lori Brebant, health director at ATC, explained that the need became evident after an assessment was completed and highlighted transportation to and from Fort Chipewyan as an issue for medical patients with one of the biggest concerns spending extended periods of time away from home.

 

“This is the beginning of a new relationship between ATC and Northwestern Air Lease. In addition to increased flights and comparable pricing, we are pleased to offer other services such as charters and freight options,” said Jim Heidema, COO, Northwestern Air Lease.

Northwestern Air Lease’s planes that are larger and have two engines, resulting in shorter flight times as well as added comfort.

A joint statement from Chief Archie Waquan of the Mikisew Cree First Nation and Chief Allan Adam of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation read: “We are excited about the opportunity for ATC to work with Northwestern Air in order to better serve our members. Time-sensitive travel for health is always in high-demand for our remote community. Now we another have another option to meet those needs.”
