Fort McMurray Public School District’s (FMPSD) Technology Department’s Technology and Trades Academy has won the coveted Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA) 2017 School Board Innovation and Excellence Award.

The free after school academy was launched in 2015 at Dr. K. A. Clark Elementary Public School and Walter and Gladys Hill Public School with only 120 students. Now the program has grown to 10 schools, 550 students and two strands of learning: Digital Media and Pre-Engineering.

Linda Mywaart, FMPSD Board Chair says the board is honoured to receive the award.

“The Board thanks Ali Syed, Director, FMPSD Tech for his vision and his conviction to lead the District in technology and trades, and we thank all staff and community members who brought that vision to life. It’s another fine example in FMPSD of Doing What’s Best for Kids.

Ali Syed, Director of Technology, FMPSD was thrilled about the award and says the objective of the Academy is to empower students with 21st century skills.
