Sisters in Spirit Vigil to honour MMIW

Last Updated Nov 22, 2017 at 6:21 pm MDT

In collaboration with ABSI Connect, Waypoints, and family violence prevention month, the Sisters in Spirit Vigil will be held on Thursday, Nov. 23, at the Nistawoyou Friendship Centre to honour the lives and stand in solidarity with the Missing and Murder Indigenous Women (MMIW) of Canada.

The Vigil will include speakers from the National Inquiry into MMIW that was held recently in Edmonton where families from the RMWB shared their stories of their missing loved ones.  There will also be local speakers on the moose hide campaign which is a grassroots movement of people who are taking the stand against violence towards Indigenous women and children.

Melissa Herman, a northern fellow with ABSI Connect, told MyMcMurray the importance of the event for the community.

“Some of the families are just coming back from the inquiry and really need our support here to show that we’re listening, trying to find solutions for them and as a region, we’re here for them,” said Herman.

Indigenous and non-indigenous people are welcome to attend the Vigil which will run from 5 p.m. till around 9.

If people in the region are looking to become more involved, they can join the No More Stolen Sisters- Treaty 8 Facebook page.
