AHS announced that it will be expanding screening for pulmonary TB exposure at a Fort McMurray daycare. There is no risk to the general public.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) announced that it will be expanding screening for pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) exposure at a Fort McMurray daycare.

Exposure was first announced on Nov. 20, 2017 with initial screening confirming four cases of dormant TB. Individuals infected with TB have inactive germs in their lungs, they do not have symptoms and are not contagious.

Screening will be expanded to include 45 children and 10 daycare staff members.

No secondary cases of infectious TB have been identified. AHS is expanding screening as a precaution to ensure all potential contacts receive assessment and screening.

There is no ongoing risk of exposure to the general public, daycare staff or attendees.

Only those notified directly by AHS are considered exposed.

No further details will be released to protect patient and family confidentiality.
