The 2018-2021 Strategic Plan was approved by council Tuesday night.

The plan, which will guide the municipality in it’s efforts to meet four strategic priorities, was approved unanimously after several questions and delegations from both Councillors and community members.

The four priorities identified in the plan as critical areas to address are:

  • Responsible government
  • Downtown revitalization
  • Regional economic development
  • Rural and Indigenous communities and parternships

Members of the Rural Coalition celebrated the approval of the plan which addresses several concerns they raised, including the implementation of the calls to action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Spokesperson for the Rural Coalition Ron Quintal said the plan sets a solid foundation for a partnership with the RMWB.

“We applaud the RMWB for their commitment to tackling some of the biggest outstanding grievances we have with the municipality.”

Several people said the plan was a step forward in promoting reconciliation in respect to the victims of Moccasin Flats, who had their homes along the Snye bulldozed in 1980 while they attended a mandatory meeting.

Linda Mason Area Director of HIV North spoke of her experience with rural and Indigenous communities and how the support of the municipality will help her organization engage with residents.

“The important thing is that we keep everybody safe in the meantime. That means safe whether they live here in Fort McMurray, whether they live in Anzac, or they live in Janvier, or whether they’re in Conklin, or whether they’re in Fort Chip.”

Overall, the plan which is based on the vision of a “vibrant, sustainable region we are proud to call home,” was well-received.
