The McMurray Métis are hoping to increase their memberships with a new campaign.

The local is holding a membership drive from Feb. 12-16th.

Each day of the campaign will focus on a different reason why community members should join the McMurray Métis, such as, harvesting rights, scholarships, a cultural centre, better employment opportunities and consultation by the government.

“There have been court decisions and government officials questioning who represents the Métis people in the northeast. We are the largest Métis Local in Wood Buffalo and have a proven track record of 31 years of success in the Fort McMurray community. The goal of our membership campaign is to encourage new members to join the Local, as any Métis person of any age can sign up,” said Bill Loutitt, chief executive officer, McMurray Métis.

To wrap up the campaign there will be a members’ appreciation dinner on Friday, Feb. 16 at 5 p.m. at the Unifor Building.
