Veterans gather for ‘left in the cold’ protest

Veterans and supporters gathered at the Cenotaph of Remembrance to take a stand for the restoration of their benefits.

Veterans gathered at the Cenotaph of Remembrance in Waterways to take a stand for the restoration of their benefits.

The protest was held in solidarity with Colin Saunders ‘Left in the Cold’ protest in Ottawa.

The rally follows comments made by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to an injured veteran, at his Edmonton town hall on Feb. 1 that they were asking for too much.

Bill Rockwell, local veteran activist said they are not looking for anything new.

“What they want is what they had previous to this new veterans charter. Under this new thing, Less than 12 per cent of veterans are even eligible for the maximum benefit,” said Rockwell.

“We just want to return to the legislation we had previously, where veterans received greater financial compensation, greater support from the government, under the pension act… that is what we want.”

Many members of our community attended the protest to show support for our veterans.
