Phil Meagher is planning to dip his toes into provincial politics.

The most experienced municipal councillor has decided he would seek the United Conservative Party nomination for Fort McMurray-Conklin.

Brian Jean stepped down as the MLA on Monday to spend more time with his family.

Meagher called the decision a new opportunity in politics.

“Timing is not always perfect but you have to strike while the iron is hot and if you wait for the perfect time it may never come,” Meagher added. “I have been in municipal politics for 23 years, so it is time for a bigger challenge on a bigger stage.”

Meagher said his reason for running was centred on policy changes at the provincial level such as Bill 21 and Bill 8, the education field and infrastructure the region needs.

If nominated, Meagher would take an unpaid leave from council and his position as Deputy Superintendent at the Public School Board.

A by election needs to be called within six months.
