A request to extend the deadline of insurance claims related to the 2016 wildfire has been made.

Council has written a letter to Premier Rachel Notley and Finance Minister Joe Ceci asking for a one-year extension on insurance claims for all residents of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo and property owners impacted by the wildfire.

Mayor Don Scott met with Minister Ceci on Monday, March 19 to present his concerns for his residents and council.

“Many residents in our region were unable to begin the process of rebuilding their homes until November 2016, with some not knowing if they would be able to rebuild as late as June 2017,” said Scott.

“Beyond these initial delays, residents with attached and semi-detached homes or condominiums continue to face significant complications with their rebuild.”

While the RMWB waits to hear if the insurance claim deadline will be extended he advises residents who are affected to speak with a lawyer and their insurance providers.

Some providers have already voluntarily made the extension.
