Council will discuss the proposed Fort Chipewyan Area Structure Plan (ASP) at Tuesday night’s meeting.

The current ASP was approved more than 25 years ago and no longer aligns with the community’s concerns and priorities.

The new 10-year plan will provide framework to develop future growth while ensuring future development is done in an orderly and sustainable matter.

Engagement sessions with residents, stakeholders, municipal staff and the provincial government identified five principles for the ASP, including protecting the environment, addressing housing needs, supporting economic and tourism opportunities, recognizing cultural needs and providing adequate municipal services such as water and sewage.

Updating the ASP will also create consistency with other municipal plans and will create alignment with the Municipality’s 2018-2021 Strategic Plan.

A motion as been proposed that a public hearing be scheduled on May 1 during a special meeting at Mamawi Community Hall in Fort Chipewyan.

A public hearing for changes to the Land Use bylaw will also take place on Tuesday to address inconsistencies and provide clarifications specific to home occupation and home business.

Tuesday’s agenda also includes annual report presentations from Combative Sports Commission and the Public Art Committee.

Council meets Tuesday Mar. 26 at 6 p.m. at Jubilee Plaza.
