The Fort McKay Métis have finalized the deal to purchase the remaining 372 acres of their land from the provincial government.

The announcement was made on Mar. 28 at a press conference held in Edmonton.

Fort McKay Métis President Ron Quintal said the transaction, which was made with the assistance of ATB financial, goes with the decision to move toward self-government.

“Now that we have land, we can proceed with an aggressive economic development plan to leverage the land into businesses, careers, housing and long-term prosperity for our people.”

The development plan includes more housing for members, a municipal firehall, gas station, cultural pavilion and healing lodge.

The Fort McKay Métis had been leasing their land from the Government of Alberta since 2007.

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo voted unanimously on Jan. 23 to approve the Fort McKay Area Structure Plan, which paves the way for land development.
