Wildfire insurance extension denied by the province

Mayor Don Scott’s request for an extension on wildfire insurance claims has been denied by the province.

In March, Scott sent letters to Premier Rachel Notley and Finance Minister Joe Ceci asking for a one-year extension on claims for all residents and property owners of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo impacted by the wildfire.

The denial means those with open claims on May 3, 2018 will lose their rights and their ability to sue.

The Superintendent of Insurance has suggested that those who still have claims open, contact their insurer and arrange for an extension. It’s also suggested that you ask for written approval from your insurer.

Ultimately, if you want to dispute your insurance claims, you should contact a lawyer before the deadline.

More information about the process can be found on the government of Alberta website.
