Members of our community came together to raise $120, 000 for the Humboldt Broncos, one week after the team’s bus crashed on route to their playoff game and 16 people were killed.

The event was made successful by organizer Mark Hartigan, Ryan Arendt, Kristy Stonehouse, Ryan Nash, Mark MacDonald, Liz MacDonald , Kelly Hanson, Chris Simms and many other volunteers.

Hartigan played in the SJHL himsellf and told MyMcMurray about the strong bonds hockey families have and how relatable this incident could be for many in our community.

“With such a tragic event like this, it hit home to so many and to all sports. Especially here in Fort McMurray, we all ride the bus, we live so far from competition,” said Hartigan.

“We all get on the bus for dance, gymnastics, hockey, whatever sport it is, you name it, we have to get in our vehicles and drive those hours down 63 and we’ve been put in these situations that we have to travel a lot so everybody here in Fort McMurray totally gets it.

A public skate was held at the Casman Centre followed by a silent auction at the downtown Boston Pizza on Saturday, April 14.
