Byelection called for July 12

People living in the Fort McMurray-Conklin provincial riding will head to the polls on Thursday, July 12.

Premier Rachel Notley had to call a byelection six months after former MLA Brian Jean resigned from office, citing personal reasons.

So far, three provincial parties have announced their candidates.

Laila Goodridge, who was born and raised in Fort McMurray, is representing the United Conservative Party (UCP).

Long-time municipal councillor, Jane Stroud, is running under the New Democrat Party.

Sid Fayad, a local business owner, was officially confirmed Thursday as the Alberta Party candidate.

Goodridge said the biggest issues she has heard from constituents is about the carbon tax and importance of getting pipelines to tidewaters.

Stroud said she is running because she wants to be a strong voice for the region.

Fayad feels strongly about improving the economy and recovering from the downturn and 2016 wildfire.
