Alberta prepared for launch of legal cannabis

Alberta will be ready when cannabis is legal in October.

On Wednesday, the federal government set the date for recreational consumption as October 17th.

Alain Maisonneuve with the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission says this includes online sales.

“We’re planning on working with the federal and provincial legal frameworks to ensure that we have some time in advance of legalization to get the product in our distribution system and out to the licensed retailers that will be in place in advance of legalization.”

Dave Berry, also with the AGLC, says they aim to have cannabis in the stores weeks ahead of the 17th, to make sure they can meet the demand.

There will also be lots of choices come the big day, with about 300 options.

“300 doesn’t mean 300 completely different products. 300 includes different package sizes, it covers both dried leaf and oils — which will be legal at the beginning — over time again it will evolve into other products depending on what happens federally,” said Maisonneuve.

Alberta Justice Minister Kathleen Ganley says retailers will be able to sell it as soon as they open on the 17th, or you can go on the web and order it from home.
