Krista Balsom will not be resigning from council.
Balsom was found to have violated the Municipal Government Act (MGA) when she voted on specific budget items that she had a financial interest in.
At the council meeting on Tuesday, Balsom’s colleagues passed a motion that would have her resign by Thursday at 4:30 p.m. or send the matter to court.
“After close consultation with family, supporters and community members I have decided I will not be resigning. I believe strongly in the principal of fairness and due process and I look to a favourable outcome in the courts. I apologize for the inconvenience that this has caused my fellow Council members and constituents, but I believe that I will be cleared in the fullness of time,” said Balsom in a statement.
The matter will now be heard before the Court of Queens Bench.
In the meantime, Balsom can not participate in taxpayer-funded travel on behalf of, or representing the Regional Municipality at any event until the court has returned an opinion.
