Report shows increase in homelessness within the province

The 2018 Alberta Point-in-Time Count of Homelessness shows an increase of 6.86 per cent compared to 2016.

Of the 5735 people counted, 72 per cent were men, which is consistent with the data collected in both 2014 and 2016.

Results also show that those under 25 years old represent 19 per cent of the homeless population, while seniors over 65 represent 5 per cent. The remaining 76 per cent are between 25 and 64 years old.

Those who identify as indigenous make up 26 per cent of the 5735, while they only make up 7 per cent of the general population.

While those who have served in the Canadian military or RCMP make up 7 per cent of the result.

The count, which was held on April 11, includes the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, Calgary, Edmonton, Lethbridge, Red Deer, Grande Prairie and Medicine Hat.

Around 940 volunteers participated in the count visiting shelters, temporary accommodations, remand centres, hospitals and police processing units.

The count will help identify the needs of the homeless population and will help plan community resources accordingly.

The federal government will also use the results to support their ongoing work in preventing and reducing homelessness.

Results from our region are expected to be released later this month.
