PHOTO. Supplied. FireSmart is a national program adopted in communities across Canada aimed at reducing the risk of wildfire in interface zones where the urban setting meets environments prone to wildfire.

In efforts to help rural residents of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) the Municipality has launched a new program to assess wildfire risks around homes and properties.

The FireSmart Home Partners Program, provides property-specific FireSmart information and individual home assessments to residents living in priority areas within the region, as identified in the 2017 RMWB Wildfire Mitigation Strategy.

Through the program residents living in Anzac, Conklin and Gregoire Lake Estates will be able to receive a home assessment, identify mitigation actions unique to their properties as well as get a detailed report with specific mitigation actions they can take to reduce the risk of wildfire damage to their properties.

“The FireSmart Home Partners Program is a great resource for residents to learn how to adapt to living in communities within our region that are prone to wildfire activity,” said Stephen Fudge, RMWB Mitigation Supervisor.

“The individual home assessments will help homeowners identify both their FireSmart successes and risks on their properties, and provide the information needed to reduce those risks. We’re excited to be implementing a unique program that takes a property-specific approach to home mitigation.”

The deadline to apply online for the program is Monday, Sept. 3, 2018.
