Building off last years success Pride YMM is hosting Pride week this year to celebrate the LGBTQ community here in Fort McMurray
Pride YMM board committee member, Cindy Hann told MyMcMurray the sense of community here is improving.
“There is a lot of great tings that happened in the past year and a lot of initiatives Pride YMM is working on and the community itself seems to be getting better as a whole,” said Hann.
Hann also mentioned that about seven years ago there was an incident when Fort McMurray tried to host a Pride event and the Pride flag was burned.
“The sense of the community is much better than it was before,” said Hann. “There is still a long ways to go and education needed but things are certainly getting better.”
By going to a pride event you can help to further establish the community.
“I think it’s important to come out and show that you are an ally to the LGBTQ community, and show some support because a lot of people in the LGBTQ community sometimes feel isolated” said Hann. “It’s good to show your support and give them the sense that they are not alone and they belong to the community.”
