FMSPCA addresses allegations of animal abuse

The Fort McMurray SPCA (FMSPCA) has released a statement after allegations of animal abuse were made on social media over the weekend.

The post, which was made on Aug. 18, said a dog had been hit on the head with a closed fist several times.

According to the statement, the staff member was working to correct aggressive behaviour against another dog.

“We have reviewed the matter with our staff who described the incident in question significantly differently than the social media post suggests. We believe in supporting our canine residents with behavioural challenges through training and positive reinforcement to give them the opportunity to enter our adoption program and find their special someone.”

Along with an internal review, the FMSPCA has also contacted the person who wrote the social media post and the Wood Buffalo RCMP to make an independent assessment.
