Baggage fees to rise with WestJet and Air Canada

YYC Calgary International Airport, after announcement that checked bag fees are going up for WestJet & Air Canada, August 28, 2018.

Passengers of Air Canada and WestJet will be digging a bit deeper into their pockets if they want to check baggage.

The two airlines announcing fee hikes following in the footsteps of American-based JetBlue.

The changes see an increase of $5 for to $30 for your first checked bag, and a $20 hike to $50 for a second bag.

The changes at WestJet are already being implemented for some flights, while Air Canada says it will implement the fee increases in early October.

660 NEWS spoke with passengers at YYC Calgary International Airport about the fee hikes; Paul wasn’t too happy.

“I think we pay enough in airfare so any increase is not something I agree with,” he explained.

Cindy and Bernie don’t think it will deter anyone from booking a flight, since people still love to travel.

“More people are traveling now than 20 years ago, but it was a lot more fun 20 years ago,” said Bernie. “I had my swing air pass in (19)65, I could fly anywhere (for) $25.”

Both airlines say they have to raise these fees because costs such as fuel are increasing.
