McKay Métis Community and Imperial reach agreement in oil sands development

The McKay Métis Community and Imperial are signing a long-term benefits agreement.

Ron Quintal, President of the McKay Métis Community wrote in a press release that this is one of the biggest success for his community and that they look forward to collaborating with Imperial and having environmental oversight.

“The McKay Métis are satisfied that Imperial’s Kearl and proposed Aspen projects are environmentally sound and will provide significant economic benefit,” said Quintal.  “Our collaboration demonstrates that responsible oil sands development can be achieved by focusing on common goals to minimize environmental impacts while creating economic benefits for our people.”

The agreement identifies direct economic benefits for the community and includes participation by the McKay Métis in environmental planning and stewarding along with the development of business capacity and contracting opportunities for its members.

Bryan Pickett, vice president of production for Imperial, stated that the two groups share a common goal to ensure environmental protection and economic prosperity to develop oil sands in a responsible manner.

“This agreement continues to build on and strengthens the relationship between Imperial and McKay Metis Community by focusing on shared values of respect and trust to build a long-term partnership,” said Pickett.

Through the agreement there will also be an investment in the development of the McKay Métis cultural pavilion in Fort McKay, which will used for cultural events, community gatherings, and showcase the unique and rich culture and history of the Métis people.
