United Way Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo launched the 2018 Community Campaign on Sept. 7, 2018 and set their goal for this year at $5-million.

“We have seen what a community campaign, in our region, looks like post-wildfire,”  said United Way Board President, Steve Yatauro. “This year, we have set a campaign goal that is appropriate for the current state of our region.  We will work with our agencies to empower them and support them while creating the greatest impact.”

Last year the campaign raised $6-million, coming up just $1.5-million short of their goal.

This year instead of focusing on meeting the goal the campaign will focus on “local love” and bringing the community together.

Ken Sandmoen, the 2018 community campaign chair, told MyMcMurray that the money raised goes towards the 27 local agencies that they help fund.

“Within those agencies there is over 55 programs and within Fort McMurray there’s thousands and thousands of people who rely on those programs,” said Sandmoen.  “The dollars do go to the people who are in those programs.”

Some of those agencies are the Canadian Mental Health Association, the Centre of Hope, Justin Slade Youth Foundation, KidSport Wood Buffalo, Local HERO Foundation, Some other Solutions and Waypoints.

The campaign will run for 10 weeks throughout the community.
