The latest scam in town has moved from the phones to residential doors.

Wood Buffalo RCMP have received reports of people knocking on doors saying they’re water testers that have been contracted out by the provincial government and the city.

They say water filtration systems need to be installed. In some cases saying they need to be installed before residents have serious health issues and that the province is providing a rebate to cover the cost.

Residents are being asked to sign a document and provide a blank cheque, or they will lose their place in line.

Police say the RMWB hasn’t contracted out any companies and they these people are providing false information.

You’re reminded not to give out money, blank cheques or personal information to strangers and to report any suspicious activity to police.

By reporting suspicious activity, RCMP are then able to track where crime is occurring, identify areas of interest, and are able to increase their presence and patrols in targeted areas.
