Rental giant Boardwalk bans growing and smoking of pot

Those who rent from Boardwalk won’t be able to grow or smoke pot in their homes once recreational use is legalized on Oct. 17.

Boardwalk owns nine building in the region with a total of 353 units.

Director of Community Development with Boardwalk, David McIlveen said that the move aligns with their top two priorities: safety and reasonable enjoyment of residents and associates.

“Since cultivation and/or smoking cannabis can negatively impact the safety or the reasonable enjoyment of residents in a multi-family property Boardwalk will not allow smoking or cultivation on its properties.”

McIlveen added that growing pot can be a safety issue if the building wasn’t originally designed for the excessive moisture and electrical load that’s needed to cultivate the plant.

When it comes to the enforcement of the new rules, McIlveen said it will simply be complaints from other residents that will be followed up on.

If the “reasonable enjoyment” of other residents is being violated tenants could face eviction under the Residential Tenancies Act.

Overall, he said any negative responses to the move have been anonymous.
