Council will meet on Oct. 1, 2018 to update the bylaws on cannabis legalization in the region. These updates are meant to provide clarification to the public on smoking and vaping laws and to allow cannabis retail stores and production facilities in more land use districts. The proposed changed strike a balance between economic development opportunities and law to mitigate community concerns.

A special meeting was held on July 9, 2018 for council to prepare for legalization and to make amendments to the land use bylaw, license bylaw and a smoking and vaping bylaw. These amendments outline where cannabis retail stores and production facilities can be located and operate in the region and how cannabis can legally be consumed in the region.

The proposed amendments to the land use bylaw would allow for cannabis retail stores to also be allowed in the central business district and the highway commercial district as well as in the business industrial district of Taiganova Industrial Park.

The smoking and vaping bylaw would be amended to reduce the public’s exposer to secondhand smoke.

Council will also further outline the prohibited places for smoking, signage that will be posted in no smoking or vaping areas as well as the penalties and enforcement that will be put into place.

The meeting will be held in the council chambers of Jubilee Plaza at 6 p.m. on Oct. 1, 2018.
