Council approved the first reading to proposed amendments to bylaws surrounding cannabis legalization at the council meeting on Oct. 1, 2018.

Now a public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2018 to further clarify to the public where cannabis consumption and sales can take place in the region.

When cannabis is officially legal on Wednesday, Oct. 17 adults of age 18 can legally purchase, consume and possess up to 30 grams of cannabis on them and grow up to four cannabis plants per household.

The smoking and vaping bylaw is being amended to further prevent impact of second hand smoke and will prohibit smoking both tobacco and cannabis products in public places.

Cannabis can be consumed on private property upon building owners approval.

As far as sales go, a number of rules are being put into place and all retail stores must be located a minimum of 150 meters from schools, day care centres, hospitals, rehabilitation centres in the Urban Service Area and 100 meters from schools and playgrounds in the hamlets.

An amendment that council is considering making is to the land use bylaw to allow for retail stores to also be allowed in the central business district and the highway commercial district as well as in the business industrial district of Taiganova Industrial Park.
