The Fort McMurray Public School District (FMPSD) received new learning resources Friday from MindFuel Science Alberta Foundation thanks to a generous donation from Syncrude.

The district was presented with 22 Ignition Packs which provide teachers with hands-on resources to teach an entire unit of science.

Kerry Barwick Maintenance Manager at Syncrude said the company has partnered with MindFuel for several years.

“Syncrude recognizes in today’s tech-filled world, science and technology learning is foundational to student success and it’s directly relevant to the work that many Syncrude employees do. That’s why all of us at Syncrude want to do our part to ensure that student’s in our region and their teachers have access to the best STEM learning tools available.”

Mayor Don Scott called the donation “an investment in our young people” and said he hopes to see similar investments in the future.

Merrie-Rae Mitsopoulos Director of Education said the packs, which are designed for students in grades four to nine, are well-designed with engaging activities.

“These packs provide excellent resources for teachers that are aligned with the Alberta curriculum and with an Alberta focus.”

Syncrude was presented with the “Excellence in Education” award at the FMPSD Partners in Education event on Oct. 11.
