The Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC) and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo celebrated the official grand opening of the Conklin Multiplex on Oct. 20, 2018.

Construction of the project broke ground four years ago, on Oct. 27, 2014 but went through a number of hoops to finally get built.

It was deferred in July of 2016 when Council was concerned about the cost and scope of the $50-million project, arguing that it was larger than necessary for the community and worries that it was approved under misleading circumstances including an original understanding that the facility would also house space for Alberta Health Services, the RCMP, and by-law.

The project was back on the books a month later after overwhelming community support.

The community finally gathered for a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony that highlighted local dance and music.

“This is an exciting day for residents of Conklin and the surrounding area,” says Mayor Don Scott. “This facility will be a community hub where people come together for exercise, friendship and fun.”

The Multiplex will serve both Conklin and Janvier and includes a fitness centre, arena, gymnasium, fitness studio, activity space, Elder room, kitchen, meeting spaces and more.

“This has been one of the dreams of this community. It is absolutely a win-win situation,” says Yvonne McCallum, Conklin Elder. “Our children, too, need a chance to grow and develop their skills. They will have a much better chance to meet their potential. There are no limits to what they can do. Thank you to everyone who participated, supported, and recognized that Conklin needed a facility that will finally meet the needs of our residents within all age groups and empower them to seek the greater things that life has to offer.”

The new facility will replace the Nakewin Centre which has become outdated.
