Surekha’s on the Snye encouraging people to #BringYourOwnMug

Surekha’s on the Snye is one of five coffee shops in Canada participating in the Silver Chef ‘Brewing for Sustainability’ initiative that offers a reusable alternative to single-use coffee cups.

A press release stated that in Canada alone, 14 billion cups of coffee are consumed every year, with 35 per cent of coffee consumed in single-use cups.  These represent up to 35,000 tonnes of paper, made from more than 70,000 tonnes of raw wood, harvested from thousands of hectares of forest.  Despite this impact, fewer than two per cent of coffee lovers will bring their own mugs, even if charged a fee.

The “Brewing for Sustainability” quantitative or #BringYourOwnMug movement is hoping to address this issue and promote sustainable consumer behaviours.

Starting on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2018 the first 10 customers who purchase a coffee to go from Surekha’s on the Snye will receive it a ceramic mug.  The customers can then take these free ceramic mugs away and return them later, or trade them for old mugs they have at home.

Surekha Kanzig, owner of the café told MyMcMurray that their location on the waterfront in Snye Point Park inspired them to participate.

“We are in a really beautiful location, we’re surrounded by nature and when you’re in the restaurant or around the restaurant you really are reminded about how beautiful our environment and nature is and it is so important that we all work hard to preserve our environment and our planet,” said Kanzig.

Kanzig is hoping that the initiative spreads throughout the community.

Consumers and coffee shop owners can participate and join the conversation using the hashtag #BringYourOwnMug.
