Alberta Health Services (AHS) staff in the region were honoured with the Providing Health Education award on Oct. 25.

The award recognizes Fort McMurray’s North Zone Population and Public Health team and Community Wellness team for being community and wellness champions, specifically for their work putting together the Healthy Tools for Healthy Tots kits.

Carolyn Evancio, a public health promotion facilitator with AHS said 49 kits were distributed across the region post-wildfire.

“We recognized that many early-entry programs, childcare centres and day homes, who all worked with young children, had lost resources, learning activities and teaching materials in the 2016 wildfire in Fort McMurray,”

She added that the emotional and stressful experience made it even more important for children to receive constant health education.

The kits included resources for healthy eating, active living and positive well-being along with learning activities

The teams were recognized in Jasper at the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association’s annual ChooseWell Community Awards.
