Annual Poppy Campaign goes digital

The annual poppy campaign is occurring across Canada and in the digital realm.

This Remembrance Day will mark the centennial of the original Armistice, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, ending what was then the greatest and most violent conflict the world had seen.

To show support for our Veterans and remember those who lost their lives while defending our country Canadians across the country will wear a poppy.

The poppy campaign runs every year from last Friday of October and continues until Remembrance Day.

President of the Royal Canadian Legion, McMurray Branch 165, Pat Duggan told MyMcMurray how the money raised goes towards helping Veterans.

“Whether it be medical, educational, different things for any Veteran who served our country in any capacity,” said Duggan. “As soon as their not able to get assistance through Veterans affairs or other means, we’re typically the last hope a lot of these Veterans have when it comes to financially assistance.”

Poppy trays will be at different locations across the region and this year there is a digital poppy campaign at mypoppy.ca that allows you to donate to the Legion for a personalized poppy for social media.

The digital poppy costs nothing to produce, so all funds raised go towards support Canadian veterans.

Remembrance Day services will be held at Mac Island at 9:45 a.m. and at the Legion at 10:45 a.m.
