United Way extends campaign to try to reach goal

With expectations of coming up short on their original $5 million goal, The United Way Fort McMurray and Wood Buffalo announced a new goal for this year’s campaign with an extended deadline.

“Based on everything that we know, we are projecting that the community campaign will end up raising approximately $4.0 million and will likely fall short of our need goal by $1 million,” said Ken Sandmoen, Community Campaign Chair.

Last year the campaign raised $6-million, coming up just $1.5-million short of their goal.

So far this year they have reached 60 per cent of their goal with growth in their Red Menu initiative, fundraising events and community engagement however looking ahead they felt the need to make an adjustment in order to best meet the growing needs of the community.

“We have more agencies requesting more funding this year than we were able to support last year,” said Andrea Hine, Chair of the Community Investment Committee.  In that context, the gap is even larger.”

The deadline of the campaign will be extended to the end of the year.

“We are asking people and companies to assist us at this difficult time. If everyone can find a way to give a little, it would add up to a whole lot,” said Sandmoen.  “With your help today, everyone in Wood Buffalo will have the opportunity to be successful. Your support will make the difference to solve the needs of people in our community.”

Donations can be made through the United Way website or in person at The Redpoll Centre at Shell Place.
