Alberta highschool football championships taking over Shell Place

The best of Alberta high school football will be taking over Shell Place this weekend with the Alberta Bowl being hosted at SMS Equipment Stadium at MacDonald Island Park.

George Grant. Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association (ASAA) Commissioner told MyMcMurray that Fort McMurray was chosen to host the five championship games because of the work by local football coach and vice principal of Westwood Community High School, Brendan Toner and the facility at Shell Place.

“Its top notch, this is world class,” said Grant. “This is one of the best facilities I have been involved in and it’s absolutely perfect.”

Toner said being able to host the ultimate event for high school football in Alberta is a testament to the hard work that players and coaches have done to put Fort McMurray on the provincial football map over the last 15 years.

“We want to showcase our city and our facilities and really for anytime we’ve hosted a sporting event here the takeaway that most people have is that they didn’t realize how awesome our city is and they didn’t realize the amount of work we put in to hosting quality events.” Said Toner. “So we know that these teams will probably won’t have much of an idea of what we’re all about but by the time they play and live here they are going to take good stories home with them.”

Ten of the top high school football teams in the province kick off the tournament on Friday, Nov 23 at 4 p.m. with the 6 Man and the Tier 4 champions at 7 p.m. followed on Saturday, Nov. 24 with three championship games for Tiers 3, 2, and 1.  The full schedule and latest information can be found online.

“People will have an opportunity to see some of the best high school football in the country, many of the kids of these teams will be moving into a junior or CIS team,” said Toner, “so before we see them in the CFL or the NCAA or CIS there going to be here, so it’s the chance to see some of the best youth sport you can possibly see.

Tickets are available at the gate, they are $10 for a one day pass for adults, and $5 for a one day pass for children and students ages 7 – 17 with free admission for children 6 and under.
