Wheelchair Sports Alberta (WSA) will be in Fort McMurray on Saturday Dec. 1, 2018 to provide free parasport demonstrations.

This event is for individuals of all ages and abilities to try wheelchair rugby, tennis, basketball and curling.

“It allows people with disabilities as well as able bodied to experience parasport and maintain an active lifestyle,” said Ryan van Keulen, WSA technical director.

He told MyMcMurray that they are building on last year’s successful event.

“Last year we did a similar event, we had 40 individuals come out, so with that we decided we wanted to apply for a grant to get more consistent programming for Fort McMurray,” said van Keulen.

WSA recently received a 2018 Jumpstart Parasport Fund with the purpose to develop parasports programs in the community.

“So we are coming up there to demo a few more sports, find out where the community truly is engaged so we could create a program that is developed for the people of Fort McMurray,” said van Keulen.

The funding will create a one year program within Fort McMurray and then WSA plans to continue working in the community.

The event will be held at St. Gabriel’s School from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the gymnasium.

All the equipment and coaching will be provided by WSA.
