The Fort Chipewyan winter road opened at noon on Dec. 14, 2018.

Initially the road will only be open to light traffic 5,000 kg and lower and only 4×4 equipped vehicles should be used when travelling the road. Motorists with vehicles heavier than that are requested to stay off the winter road until load limits have been increased to prevent damage to the road that could cause safety hazards or delays in reaching heavier load limits once the ice thickens.

There is a steep ramp at the Athabasca River, located 32 south of Fort Chipewyan and motorists are being advised to watch for that along with workers, equipment and other motorists on the road.

Those travelling should stay on the right side of the road on hills for enhanced safety, drive to road conditions and obey all posted signage.

Always be prepared for emergencies as there are no regular services like road patrol, gas stations or cell phone coverage.

Updates will be provided as required.

Additional information is available on the Municipality’s website, by calling the Pulse line at 780-743-7000 and via a recorded message on the Winter Road Hotline at 866-743-6111.
