Syncrude has reached an agreement on charges relating to an incident at its Mildred Lake site in August of 2015.
As many as 31 blue herons were discovered dead or dying near a disused sump pond that wasn’t part of its waterfowl protection plan.
The company pleaded guilty to federal and provincial charges and agreed to pay a $2.75 million fine.

Cole said the organization hopes the settlement will reflect Syncrude’s “remorse” about the incident.
