State employee sues New Jersey, man she accuses of assault

TRENTON, N.J. — A New Jersey employee who says Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy’s staff botched the response to her allegations that a campaign staffer sexually assaulted her is suing the alleged attacker and the state.

Katie Brennan sued Monday in Mercer County Superior Court.

The case goes back to October when Brennan, who is chief of staff of the state’s housing finance agency, came forward.

She says Albert Alvarez sexually assaulted her in 2017 when they both were working to get Murphy elected. He denies the allegations.

She says she went to authorities and officials in Murphy’s transition office and administration, but little was done.

Her suit asks the court to release her from a requirement for confidentiality. She says such requirements fail accusers.

The state attorney general declined comment. Alvarez’s attorney did not return a message.
