Students return to classes at Indiana school shooting site

RICHMOND, Ind. — Students have returned for classes to an Indiana school for the first time since a teenager fatally shot himself after exchanging gunfire with police on campus last month.

About 50 parents, residents, law enforcement officers and administrators at Dennis Intermediate School in Richmond greeted and waved as students in grades 5-8 arrived Monday morning for the first day of classes there since the 14-year-old boy died Dec. 13.

Superintendent Todd Terrill tells the Palladium-Item that attendance was above 90 per cent for Dennis’ 550 students.

Students were following a normal class schedule Monday. Terrill says counsellors were available and therapy dogs were on hand to wander through the school. Substitute teachers were also available to cover a class if a teacher needed a break.
