If you or a loved one had a child in Alberta in the past year, then they may be a chart-topper!

Exactly 50,104 babies entered the world across the province in 2018 with 1,176 of those special deliveries arriving at the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre.

When it comes to baby names, Olivia held onto the top spot for 2018 as the most popular name for girls in Alberta for the fifth straight year, while Liam reclaimed the number one ranking for boys from Noah, last year’s frontrunner. This is only the second time in three years Liam topped the list for baby boys, but names like Oliver, Noah, and Ethan are gaining in popularity.

Oddly enough, 13,363 new names were added to the Service Alberta registry. The names come from pop culture references and books of the Bible to nature and science.

“Congratulations to all the new parents, and welcome to all of our new Albertans. As these children grow up, they will shape our future. We are going to help make sure they get a great start, with thousands of affordable child care spaces across Alberta, stronger child and family benefits, and hundreds of new and modernized schools.” said Alberta Premier Rachel Notley.
