US agent: Mexican police excluded from 2014 El Chapo manhunt

NEW YORK — An American drug enforcement agent says he purposely kept Mexican police in the dark about efforts in 2014 to hunt down the drug lord known as El Chapo.

DEA Agent Victor Vasquez testified Wednesday at the U.S. trial of Joaquin Guzman (wah-KEEN’ gooz-MAHN’) about how he organized an operation involving only Mexican marines. He says he believed the police were too corrupt to be part of it.

Vasquez described first going after another Sinaloa cartel boss in a raid that failed to find him. The trial day ended before he could describe efforts to find Guzman, who was caught in 2014 but ended up escaping.

The notorious kingpin was recaptured in 2016 and sent to the U.S. to face drug-trafficking charges. He says he’s being framed.
