How major US stock indexes fared Friday

Stocks in the U.S. and Europe jumped Friday as renewed hopes for progress in trade talks between the U.S. and China helped the markets finish the week with another strong gain.

On Friday:

The S&P 500 index leaped 34.75 points, or 1.3 per cent, to 2,670.71.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 336.25 points, or 1.4 per cent, to 24,706.35.

The Nasdaq composite rose 72.76 points, or 1 per cent, to 7,157.23.

The Russell 200 index of smaller-company stocks gained 15.25 points, or 1 per cent, to 1,482.50.

For the week:

The S&P 500 surged 74.45 points, or 2.9 per cent.

The Dow climbed 710.40 points, or 3 per cent.

The Nasdaq picked up 185.75 points, or 2.7 per cent.

The Russell 2000 added 35.12 points, or 2.4 per cent.

For the year:

The S&P 500 is up 163.86 points, or 6.5 per cent.

The Dow is up 1,378.89 points, or 5.9 per cent.

The Nasdaq is up 521.95 points, or 7.9 per cent.

The Russell 2000 is up 133.94 points, or 9.9 per cent.
