Oil Barons finish weekend with loss in Bonnyville

After falling behind Saturday night against the Bonnyville Pontiacs, the Fort McMurray Oil Barons mounted an incredible third period comeback that led to an overtime win.

On Sunday, the MOB found themselves in a similar situation but were unable to duplicate that same magic as they fell 5-2 in the second game of a back to back in Bonnyville.

For a second straight game the Pontiacs (31-10-3) opened the scoring with a powerplay goal. Daine Dubois tipped in a Luke Albert pass 4:07 into the first period to put the Pontiacs up 1-0 early.

The Barons (22-16-7) had a much better first period than a night earlier and tied the game off an aggressive forecheck. Brendan Stafford laid a check on the end boards and the puck came to Reed Morison. For a third straight game, Morison set up Kole Gable who deposited his 20th goal of the year and extended his point streak to 12 games.

The Pontiacs would break open the game in the second period and it started with an unfortunate bounce against the Oil Barons. Chris Curr came out of his net after the Pontiacs dumped the puck into the MOB zone. The puck took a weird deflection off the glass and ended up in front of the goal where Joel Ray tapped in the easy goal.

The Pontiacs took a 3-1 lead three minutes later at 6:28 of the period when Greyson Constable finished off a quick passing play on a powerplay.

The Barons looked to have a glorious chance late in the period when Jarred White stole the puck off Albert at the MOB blueline. White raced down the right side and spotted Peter Tomaras coming in late. The pass was missed and sent the Pontiacs back the other way where Albert beat Curr up high to make it 4-1 through two periods.

Taner Miller cut the lead in half with his 9th goal of the season 1:10 into the third period to give the MOB a chance but the Pontiacs would get another to put the game away when Noah Lugli beat Curr on the far side.

Curr made 39 saves in the loss while Colby Muise kicked out 36 Oil Baron shots in the win.

The MOB will head back out on the road later this week for another three game swing that see’s them in Drayton Valley on Thursday, Spruce Grove Friday and Sherwood Park on Saturday.
