CALGARY (660 NEWS) – A new poll shows that a majority of voters in Alberta support the United Conservative Party, but fewer approve of its leader.

That’s according to the latest survey from Mainstreet research which shows 52 per cent of decided voters support the UCP, while 39 per cent approves of its leader Jason Kenney. That’s down from 45 per cent in the last poll.

On the other side of the spectrum, the NDP is behind in support at 25 per cent, but Premier Rachel Notley saw her approval rating jump to 36 per cent compared to 31 per cent in the last poll in November.

“We’ve always seen her approval ratings doing better than what conventional wisdom had, that she was an unpopular premier, she’s as unpopular as Kathleen Wynne was in Ontario and that never was true and now we’re seeing an uptick in support for that”, said Vice President of Mainstreet Joseph Angolano.

NOVEMBER SURVEY FROM MAINSTREET

When it comes to the support for the United Conservatives, Angolano said it’s nothing to get too excited about.

“They are a union of two parties and their support right now, and has been for the last six months, is basically a straight addition of (support) of Wildrose and the PCs.”

Although the Provincial election has yet to be called, the NDP could use the numbers toward Jason Kenney in its favour.

“They’ll look at that and say, ‘ok, he’s not super, super popular, maybe this is a front of attack for us. That might be a theme that they’d look at in the next election.”
